Description

Yellow Balau is one of the most popular and durable tropical hardwood decking options available in the UK. Renowned for its exceptional density, natural strength, and resilience, it provides a premium, long-lasting surface that handles heavy foot traffic with ease. The timber features a beautiful range of golden-brown to warm reddish-yellow tones, which slowly mature into a rich mahogany brown over time. Grain patterns are typically fine and interlocked, giving your deck a clean, sleek, and highly attractive finish. Its high natural oil content gives it outstanding resistance to fungal decay, rot, and insect attack without needing chemical pressure treatment.

Treatment: Yellow Balau does not require chemical treatment as it is naturally durable (Class 1-2). However, to preserve its vibrant golden-brown colour, we strongly recommend applying a high-quality exterior hardwood oil, such as Osmo Decking Oil or Owatrol. Left untreated, the timber will weather naturally over time into an attractive silvery-grey patina (which many customers love). If you prefer to restore the original warm tones after it has greyed, a quick application of a wood cleaner/restorer and fresh oil will easily bring the colour back.

Samples: Sample size is 150mm long and 2 shall be sent per request. The value of the request shall be deducted from your order should you proceed with our product.

Growth

Shorea laevis, commonly known as Yellow Balau (or Bangkirai), is a magnificent slow-growing tropical hardwood species native to the lush rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Indonesia. These dominant canopy trees can reach towering heights of up to 150 to 200ft, developing immense trunks and broad buttress roots over decades. Due to its slow growth rate, the timber develops an exceptionally dense, tight grain structure that gives Yellow Balau its world-renowned strength and natural durability.

Colour

Yellow Balau offers a rich and warming natural colour palette, ranging from pale straw and golden yellow to deep reddish-browns. As the timber is exposed to sunlight, these varied shades naturally blend together into a warm, uniform mahogany tone. Its fine, interlocked grain provides a sleek, smooth texture and a sophisticated finish. Left untreated, exposure to the elements will cause the wood to weather naturally into an elegant silver-grey patina.

Applications

Residential Garden Decks & Patios: The ultimate choice for outdoor dining, entertaining areas, and sun terraces. Its rich golden-brown hues create a warm, high-end extension of your indoor living space.

Landscaping & Garden Features: Perfect for constructing integrated garden steps, raised planter seating, elevated walkways, bridge crossings, and perimeter decking alongside ponds or water features.

Poolside Decking & Hot Tub Surrounds: Naturally resistant to water splash and rot, Yellow Balau performs fantastically around pools, spas, and hot tubs, offering a solid and comfortable surface underfoot.

  • Durability

Yellow Balau is classified as a Class 1 (Very Durable) hardwood under BS EN 350 standards, giving it an expected service life of 30 to 50+ years above ground. Yellow Balau is an exceptionally versatile and heavy-duty hardwood, widely chosen for high-spec outdoor projects. Its extreme density makes it ideal for residential decking, heavy-footfall commercial walkways, boardwalks, fencing, and landscaping structures. Highly resistant to impact, rot, and moisture, it delivers maximum performance and long-lasting visual appeal in demanding exterior environments.

  • Treatment & Installation

Because Yellow Balau is naturally durable, chemical pressure treatment is unnecessary. However, we recommend applying a end-grain sealant during installation to prevent moisture intake, along with a high-quality hardwood decking oil (such as Osmo or Owatrol) to retain its golden-brown tones and minimize natural surface checking. Due to its extreme density, boards must be pre-drilled before fixing. Always use high-grade stainless steel screws or fixings to prevent corrosion and chemical staining or reacting with the natural tannins in the wood.
