Canadian Western Red Cedar:

The Canadian Western Red Cedar cladding we supply is generally supplied in "Clear and Better No.2 85-15" grade which is one of the most popular grades of Western Red Cedar available due to it being much more cost effective than Full No2 Clear & Better. If you do want the top grade, please do get in touch as we can get this machined up for you to order. The timber is almost knot free giving you a nice clean finish to your cladding there will be the occasional knot which usually you can cut out around doors or windows. The colour of the cedar is a quite remarkable range of dark reddish-brown to pale pinks and oranges this quite possibly being the reason you’re looking at Canadian Western Red Cedar in the first place!

Treatment:

You do not need to apply any treatment to the timber as it is naturally durable although we recommend using Osmo or Treatex UV Oil to enhance the appearance as this will prevent it from turning silver (which some customers love) it is important to apply a fresh coat every 2 - 5 years to retain the colour. If you do miss this time frame it is quite easy to get it back so don't panic, Just get the sander out!

Growth

Thuja Plicata, also known as Western Red Cedar, is a truly remarkable species. In its native Canadian forests, it can reach towering heights of up to 200ft, with growth rates of around 2ft per year. Renowned for its longevity, many trees live for centuries, with some recorded at over 1,000 years old.

Colour

Canadian Western Red Cedar offers a striking natural palette, with tones ranging from light honey through warm amber to deep reddish-browns. Its straight grain and fine texture provide a refined, contemporary look, while subtle variations between boards add depth and character. Left untreated, it gradually matures to an elegant silver-grey.

Applications

Canadian Western Red Cedar is a versatile softwood suitable for a wide range of projects. Common uses include exterior cladding, interior feature walls, fencing, garden rooms, and saunas, where its natural durability and pleasant aroma are highly valued. Lightweight and easy to work with, it delivers both practical performance and timeless visual appeal.
